Avant mutual Q&A Session: COVID-19 The changing landscape

Avant mutual will hold an online discussion about the changing vaccine landscape, addressing the issues you and your practice may face during the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines.

Professor Kristine Macartney from the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) and Director of National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance (NCIRS), will join a panel of Avant medico-legal experts and cover issues such as:

  • Unpacking the ATAGI recommendations
  • An overview of liability and indemnity issues
  • COVID-19 vaccines and the flu vaccine.

The webinar is aimed at general practitioners and practice owners, including practice staff. During the session, panelists will also answer your questions on the above and the COVID-19 vaccination program. Please submit these here or via the registration form.

About the speakers
Professor Kristine Macartney

Director, The National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance (NCIRS) 

Professor Macartney is a paediatric infectious disease consultant at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and a professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of Sydney. Her research interests include all aspects of vaccine preventable disease research. Kristine acts regularly as an expert consultant to the World Health Organisation (WHO) and is a member of peak advisory committees in Australia. She also leads the Australian national AusVaxSafety and Paediatric Active Enhanced Disease Surveillance (PAEDS) networks, and is the founding chair of the Australian Regional Immunisation Alliance (ARIA).

Ms Georgie Haysom 
Lawyer, Head of Advocacy, Education and Research, Avant 

Georgie is the Head of Advocacy, Education and Research at the medical indemnity insurer Avant. She is a lawyer and has worked in health law for over 25 years, assisting and advising doctors on a wide range of medico-legal issues. 

Ms Ruanne Brell 
Senior Solicitor – Medico-legal Advisory Service, Avant 

Ruanne is a lawyer who provides telephone and written advice to members on a wide variety of medical and health law areas. Ruanne regularly presents and writes on topical medico-legal areas for internal and external organisations and publications. She has been on the editorial panel of the Australian Health Law Bulletin since 2014 and is a regular contributor. She is also the co-author of The National Disability Insurance Scheme Handbook with Bill Madden and Janine McIIwraith.

Dr Patrick Clancy 
Senior Medical Adviser, Avant Mutual 

Patrick has been a doctor for over 25 years, working in both general practice and hospital emergency departments. Additionally, Patrick has been an owner and director of general practices. He has experience in assisting doctors in medico-legal matters and was also previously a member of a state medical board. Patrick has presented and written widely on medico-legal topics, with a particular focus on minimising the risks faced by doctors.
