Dr John Deery

Chair of AGPA and owner of YourGP@Lyneham & YourGP@Crace

Dr John Deery graduated from UNSW in 2000. He is the business owner of YourGP@Crace and YourGP@Lyneham in Canberra and is passionate about delivering high quality care to patients. He grew up in the NSW country towns of Tumut, Moree and South Grafton. He loves sport and used to be a professional Rugby League player for the St George Dragons and Sydney Roosters. His current sport of choice is table tennis and he aspires to play A grade in the Canberra competition.

Dr Mukesh Haikerwal

Deputy Chair of AGPA and Practice Principal Altona North Medical Group

Mukesh is a General Medical Practitioner in Altona North in the West of Melbourne, Victoria Australia. He is in a group teaching and training practice where he has worked since 1991 with his wife Karyn Alexander.

He says, “I was alerted to AGPA group around the time the “#BigPath” issue peaked. It became clear to me that a special interest group of GP Owners was a very important vehicle to promote private general practice and seek to give some voice to those that own, invest in and run their own practices.

“There is a need to support this segment of the GP community and to encourage others to continue to be independent and masters of their own destiny. Unique in such movements, my view is AGPA can be a supportive movement and interest group that strengthens the overall efforts to maintaining best quality, affordable prosperous and effective General Practice driven medical care in Australia whilst rigorously voicing the views, expertise and wisdom of our small businesses. I remain a proud member of the AMA and the RACGP and am a proponent of AGPA.”

DR. KEVIN ARLETT

Director AGPA and Practice Partner Townsville and Suburban Medical Practice

Dr Kevin Arlett is a general practice partner in the Townsville and Suburban Medical Practice. He was the team physician for Toyota North Queensland Cowboys Rugby League Club for many years and is currently the Team Doctor for the Townsville Fire Basketball Team.

Kevin is a general practitioner with a special interest in sports medicine. He is a fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practice, where his experience included being regional coordinator for the Family Medicine Program in North Queensland. He is the current Chair of the Northern Australia Primary Health Limited, the successor organisation to the Townsville Mackay Medicare Local where he was chair from 1999. Kevin has also served on the state bodies of General Practice Queensland (GPQ) as a Director and Chairman, as well as serving as the GPQ representative on Health Workforce Queensland for three years, also as a Director. He is a Fellow of Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Kevin is heavily involved in medical education and often speaks at conferences and events, especially around his experience as a high-level sports doctor.

DR Sarah Lewis

Director AGPA, Director Port Melbourne Medical Centre

Dr Sarah Lewis was appointed as an AGPA Director in August 2023. Sarah as been instrumental in representations made to the Victorian Government and the opposition regarding the application of payroll tax on GP medical fees and the impact that this will have on primary care in Victoria.

Dr Nick Tellis

Director AGPA and Director Partridge GP

Practice Principal at Partridge GP, Adelaide, SA Nick is also an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at Flinders University College of Medicine and Public Health.

With over 20 years experience as a GP and 14 years as a Practice owner Nick has broad experience in General Practice both in providing health care and in providing the facilities and staff for the delivery of primary health care.

DR. BERNARD SHIU

Director AGPA and Owner and Clinical Director of Banksia Medical Centre

Dr Bernard Shiu is the Owner and Clinical Director of Banksia Medical Centre in Geelong and Torquay. He served as the deputy chair of RACGP (Vic) for 4 years. He was awarded the GP of the year by RACGP in 2020. His clinics were awarded the National and Victoria Clinic of the year in 2023. He is an expert advisor for the Department of Health and SafeCare Victoria.

Besides running a very busy clinic, he also teaches medical students at Deakin Medical School and supervises registrars daily at his practice.

Bernard was born in Hong Kong and grew up in California, USA. He received tertiary education and clinical training across the globe with experience working in California, New York, Hong Kong, London, Notthingham, Darby and other parts of the UK. He eventually settled in Geelong more than 14 years ago and became a clinic owner in 2015.

Bernard is a keen musician and has been an active member of Geelong Symphony Orchestra and Australian Doctors’ Orchestra for many years. On top of that, he plays the bass guitar for ‘The Euthymics’ which is a band make up of entirely GPs in Australia.

Outside of medicine and music, he also enjoys an active life style. You will find him on his bike around the Bellarine Peninsula over the weekends.
